How Scoring Works

The Three-Tier Scoring System

Prediction King rewards accuracy in three distinct tiers. An exact scoreline—predicting both teams' exact goals—earns the maximum points. Correctly calling the result (win, loss, or draw) without the exact scoreline earns fewer points. A wrong result earns nothing. This structure separates genuine football knowledge from random guessing.

Exact Scoreline: Maximum Points

Predicting the exact final score demands deep understanding of how teams actually perform. You must consider a club's attacking output, defensive solidity, and how those characteristics interact against specific opponents. A team averaging 1.8 goals per game rarely scores four. A defence that concedes 0.9 per match is unlikely to ship three. Getting both numbers right requires synthesizing form data, fixture difficulty, injury status, and tactical matchups.

Exact scorelines also reflect the reality that football outcomes cluster around likely totals. Most Premier League matches finish 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, or 2-0. The probability model built into expert prediction recognizes these patterns. Rewarding exact scores incentivizes you to think like an analyst rather than hope for a surprise result.

Correct Result, Wrong Scoreline: Partial Points

You may correctly identify that Manchester City will beat Brighton, but predict 3-1 when they win 2-0. This shows genuine predictive skill—you knew the outcome—but missed the precision layer. This tier awards meaningful points because calling the right result demands knowledge of relative team quality, head-to-head records, and form trajectories. However, it scores lower than exact predictions because football knowledge should be rewarded proportionally to accuracy.

This tier also acknowledges that even expert analysts disagree on exact margins. The gap between predicting a 2-1 win and a 3-1 win might reflect one team's attacking depth or a goalkeeper's form—valid variables that experienced predictors weigh differently. Getting the direction right still counts.

Wrong Result: Zero Points

Predicting a draw when the match ends 2-1 to either side earns nothing. This is the knowledge threshold: you failed to identify which team would win or if it would be even. Wrong results indicate a fundamental gap in reading the match—perhaps misunderstanding a team's current strength, tactical setup, or motivation level. The game does not reward this with partial credit because a wrong direction suggests the prediction lacked a solid analytical foundation.

Why This System Values Knowledge

Random guessing performs poorly across a full season. Over 380 Premier League matches, pure luck produces inconsistent results clustered toward the mean. Systematic study of form, statistics, and tactical patterns creates predictable outperformance. The tiered system forces you to develop real insight: which teams score prolifically, which keep clean sheets, how home and away performances diverge, and which fixtures create specific tactical problems.
